We left early again to make the 13 hour drive from Flagstaff, AZ to San Francisco, CA. This was a long day indeed. We left early enough so that our drive through the desert wouldn't be at the hottest part of the day. And we got lucky. A storm front was moving through and we actually had rain for a good part of the morning. We even saw a double rainbow on the way out. And since we made it out so early, we missed the blistering hot of the desert for most of the drive. As we drove through the Mohave Desert, Emma had a brilliant idea!
"Hey, I've got an idea! We can build sand castles!"
And then Henry piped in and said, "Yeah, we might even see sand monsters!"
They remained entertained with the various car activities, but we also had the "How much longer?", "Are we there yet?", and the now famous, "Are we still in Texas?" questions repeated over and over again.
Jason and I DO NOT think people in California know how to drive. Traffic coming in was terrible and we weren't even in rush hour traffic. Once we hit I-5, it went downhill and we got a bit frustrated. So much so, that Daddy started talking in a silly voice and the kids found this very entertaining and funny, so then we all starting talking in silly voices and it made it a little bit more bearable. We made it into San Francisco and the GPS program that Jason has been using for the trip decided not to work, so we took the wrong bridge over and had to pay a toll and spend more time in not so good traffic. We eventually made it to our hotel and spent the next few hours deciding if we really wanted to go to Pier 39 to watch the fireworks or find another location. We opted to another location and went to watch the fireworks from Horseshoe Bay. Once again, complaining little people changed our plans and we watched most of the fireworks from the car on the way back to the hotel.
Day 5-Pier 39 San Francisco, CA
We did some shopping on Pier 39 and took a lot of pictures. We had our first taste of "fresh" seafood for lunch at the Eagle Cafe. Emma didn't want to even try any seafood. Daddy had the grilled fish -Salmon, Halibut, and Sea bass. Mommy had fish and chips. Henry and Mommy shared crab cakes as an appetizer. He ate almost an entire huge crab cake on his own! We visited the Aquarium on the Bay and saw lots of cool looking fish and other sea creatures, we learned about the many ways we can all help preserve our oceans and keep them clean, and we got to touch some of the animals as well. Henry and Daddy caught a 20 minute 4D movie about dinosaurs while Emma and Mommy did some window shopping while waiting on the boys. We watched boats coming and going, watched the fog roll past Alcatraz Island, and listened to the many languages being spoken by visitors from around the world.
Things that were originally planned, but didn't happen this trip-Fisherman's Wharf, all of Pier 39, a tour of Alcatraz Island, walking some of the streets of San Francisco, wine tastings and shopping, and a few other "boring" adult things.
